I last spoke to Robin in January and he didn't sound very well then, even though he said he was ok. I am very grateful to Robin for the help he gave me in reporting Clyde naval events when I was compiling the Marine News Deployments Column.

Re: OCTOPUS W13

Hi George I just have a little info - Ian Buxton may have more. The W number refers to Admiralty Works Department so it is likely that the vessel was in Government service when the photo was taken. I have no record of this particular vessel's history, but have just found mention of Grab Dredger DW13...

Hi Dougie
As far as I can see from Marine Tracker, the Portsmouth SD tugs are now the 'port' tugs, and regularly deal with the civilian ships as well as the grey stuff.

Hi All I have written an article about the Admiralty Lifting Craft of WW1 & WW2. The WW1 part (LC's1-7) was published in the WSS Warships magazines 170-172 (August 2012-March 2013). The later part (LC's 8-28) will start to appear shortly. If anybody is interested in subscribing to the journal, pleas...

Destroyer DAUNTLESS is currently in Florida on UNITAS 12 exercise - see http://www.blogs.mod.uk/defence_news/2012/09/defence-diary-24-september-2012.html. The D33 on AIS is actually HMS BANGOR c/s GCUL - for some reason, presumably security, they often lie about their names/numbers on the AIS identi...

As a TCV she spent her career at Devonport with PAS; turned up at Portsmouth in 1976. Sold to Liguria Maritime 30.9.78 and broken up at Sittingbourne. I think I have a slide of her at Sittingbourne which I will try to find and post.

Re: ISLEFORD 1913 - Ardrossan

ADM 1/19244 from The National Archives refers to the loss of GLEN & ISLEFORD. The contemporary record is very thin and states that GLEN was on passage from Grangemouth to Crombie and was 'probably' sunk by a ground mine. Five crew were lost. Cordite and shells were recovered from the wreck but the h...
