Re: TS Queen Mary to return to the Clyde

I wish the new owners the best of luck.

I don't think we will ever see her sail again as she is well beyond any MCA grandfather rights and would have to comply with new build regs, so the other active ships will be able to carry that flag.

Just seeing her on the river after 38 years will do.

Re: WAVERLEY 2015

What a crying shame that the only suitable candidate to have occupied the Waverley's bridge in recent years is no longer fit enough to return. A few weeks of his sociable, competent, expansive, and cheerful management would go a long way to recover the situation that has been allowed to hold sway th...

Re: MAID TO SAIL

PLEASE can someone read beyond the first headline they see and portray the real truth. The Maid has scored a First Round Pass with the HLF This awards them £230,400 to work up a full submission for the £3.8m that they are seeking. It neither guarantees that sum is on offer or indicates that the exis...

What an excellent day that was - I drove all the way from Shropshire to Greenock and back as the bus was at Onslow Park - a real preservationist on a long day out. Re: WAVERLEY 2013

I would incline to that view myself - let's be honest WCRC shift 350 people from Fort Bill to Mallaig from mid May until mid October - twice that from June to September - but they are playing to the international tourist market and Hawwy Pottah!! and they pick them up and set them down at sensible t...

Re: WAVERLEY 2013

I don't know what south coast season you were looking at, but the Solent and Isle of Wight was no plain sailing. The Thames was reportedly mainly up to par - but costly in the extreme due to pilotage charges that have been avoided with a ticketed skipper in recent years. When Waverley left the Clyde...

Re: WAVERLEY 2013

The principle is unarguable, but the factual situation somewhat different.

Public money is currently far too precious and far too scarce to be thrown away on organisations that have a whole lot more to do to help themselves before they look for external support.

I am afraid to inform you that marine officals in the area confirm that the closure of piers and navigable waters is exactly what will happen as a result of lack of sufficient use to keep them viable. That Balmoral has been scheduled on a sucide prognosis for the past few years has been bad enough -...

Its an excellent result - but - it would have been 100% better if the supporting volunteers had been taken into confidence though. It would have been far better if she had been towed down to Devon in an atmosphere of congratulations and optimism for the future rather than recriminations. But just wa...

Re: Waverley - Saturday daytime sailing cancellation

A curse on the weather right through the season - although there is a much wider story to be told yet. One must observe, though, that if it had not been for the UK wide HLF scheme a decade ago, the rebuild at the now closed George Prior's yard in Great Yarmouth, and revenue from all over the UK, the...

Balmoral

Apparently on her return to the Bristol Channel the Balmoral has grown new warning signs banning passengers from the bridge deck.

I wonder if these only apply when she is under the stewardship of one particular skipper, having spent many happy hours up there, even as recently as June!
