Yes, I saw that, Brian, and was quite surprised just how quickly they unloaded her as she was carrying a fair cargo.

(Speaking of Runcorn, the last time I was there I was around 16 years of age, a passenger on my old man's ship, and was on the wheel going up the Manchester Shipping Canal, when he walked into the wheelhouse, looked at the ship's wake (which was admittedly like a wriggly snake shape), gave me a dirty look and said in a loud enough voice for the Sailor and Bosun who were up on the Bridge at the time,

"We were going to Runcorn, Angus. Where were you going?"

Cheeky monkey :( ...... and typical Deckie, forby !

Well Angus, you couldn't go too far off course in the Ship Canal. I gather it was not as easy navigate as might think, as if you got too close to the bank the pressure would push you across again so maybe that's why you had a wriggly wake, bouncy bouncy :)
And I had you down for the helm of the 'Danny' ... now you'll have to be kept below, shovelling coal, only 6 tons a day mind you, quite a doddle.

Och, Yorkie, that's only 120 bags = 5/hour = a veritable doddle as long as you've had your morning porridge, so by all means put me down for 'down below' on the 'DANNY' - just keep me well clear of these deckie types

Ah, you are so right, steering in the Canal was not always that easy and did need vigilance and a steady hand. But the worst part of all was canting into the Runcorn berth - quite a sharp turn out the canal, involving a rapid succession of telegraph signals, e.g. Slow Ahead : Dead Slow Ahead : Stop : Slow Astern : Half Astern : Stop : Slow Astern : Dead Slow Ahead : Stop : etc, etc, etc. These were in the days before bow-thrusters, so all movements were entirely dependent on main engine and rudder movements.

I'm afraid it's Mea Culpa as far as my erratic steering was concerned, I'd like to blame the Canal and pressure surges from the Canal banks being responsible, but I steered a similarly erratic course out in the Atlantic, Irish and North Seas, down the Minch, ........ as my Old man took delight in pointing out

Very good, when you are locked down below we'll tell you that's 6 tons in 8 hours not 24 ...... like some extra porridge? :D

Yes - well seen you are from the 'Management' side in your career - misrepresentation, cheating, fibbing, bullying - this will all change when Sir Putin Salmond takes over and appoints his right-hand General Al the Puff(er) to sort you out

So that's a NO VOTE then (to shovelling coal, no politics here!) ;)
