Charles Morris was the Chief Naval Architect for Orien Line and responsible for the 1960 built ORIANA, considered to be an 'Outstanding ' ship in her own right until the Canberra came along in 1961. Both ships used 'New' materials and Morris goes into some depth on the reasons for their choice and the difficulties they had using them.
Placing all Canberra's weight aft did cause problems with regard to Oiling and Water Ballasting and care had to be taking when taking on fuel. The Southern Cross had problems with straining in heavy weather which caused some of her forward windows to leak. Even at this late stage in her life, Oriana has been fitted with a new 'Duck Billed' stern which has improved her seakeeping but done nothing for the Vibration down aft!
