When I used to go to Southampton in the 1960s ships of States Marine Lines were regular visitors. They were educational as they were named after the nicknames of the US States.
SOONER STATE which John Winters sent to me was not one of the ships I saw in those days. A C2, she was built by the Moore yard at Oakland in 1945 as EXPOUNDER but later renamed on completion as WILD HUNTER.
In 1947 she became OREGON and in 1960 SOONER STATE.
As RELIANCE DIGNITY she arrived at Kaohsiung on April 8th 1971 to be broken up.
Oklahoma is the Sooner State in reference to the non-Native settlers who staked their claims on land before the official opening date and the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889 which dramatically increased European-American settlement in the former Indian Territories.
