The arming of RFA ships is blurring the distinction between ships of the RN and those support ships of the RFA.
Many large RFA's have carried guns in recent years, the 'bolt on' Phalanx being the most widely used.

As all the weapons fitted to these ships are defensive, this is the justification in their remaining civilian, despite the large naval, and marine personnel presence at these times.
They are also performing many tasks warships are expected to undertake.

In addition to her pair of Phalanx, note the very extensive Sea Gnat decoy launchers both p & s on the deck above her boats, which resemble tubes in groups angled outboard.
