CLAN MACQUARRIE

Post by roger » Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:40 pm

Hello,
This vessel was sunk by the Italian submarine LEONARDO DA VINCI 13/June/1942
The master and 60 survivors were rescued by the French vessel DESIRADE and landed at Cape Town.
A further 28 survivors, were landed in Trinidad.
Sources vary, probably due to various spelling errors as to the name of the Rescuing ship. I have seen the name as CLARONA, CLAKRONA, and GIAROFA.
I personally think it was the Norwegian Tanker GLARONA
Could anyone confirm from a published source that it was in fact GLARONA.

Thanks and regards
Roger

No mention of the rescuing ships in the Clarkson/Fenton/Munro book on Clan Line.

However I cannot find any ships with the first threre names you mention.

GLARONA was built in Sweden in 1928. Tanker of 9,912 Gross.

Owner was a one ship company called Henry Tschadis Tankrederi A/S.

Listed under Tschudi & Eitzen, Kirkegaten 2, Postbox 428, Oslo.
Paul Hood.

Thanks for the input and the conformation that you could find no vessels bearing the various other names.

Roger
