HS 4000 KESTREL

Post by Deepol » Fri Jul 22, 2011 12:58 pm

This was a 4000hp loco built for tests on BR by Brush at Loughborough in 1967. It had mixed fortunes and remarkably was sold to Russia in 1971. I saw it a couple of times but never in a position to photograph it. I did go for a train it was supposed to haul, the 0745 Kings Cross to Newcastle but it had failed......
I think in some ways it spawned the Class 56.

Superb loco Paul, I managed to see it when it was working the Hull - London Freightliner in 1970. The local paper The Hull Daily Mail was very pro transport and carried a feature on it.

Ended up exported to the USSR and used in development work, certainly eveolved into the standard Eastern Block Class 120 and 132 diesels.

Was also the subject of a recent OO gauge model by Heljan, so I have one of those to keep the memory alive.

Regards
Simon

That's good that there's a model now. Very impressive loco.

Sadly the emphasis is "the past" and even more so now if Bombardier go.
