Whither Stranraer?

Post by Deepol » Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:15 pm

One wonders what the future holds for Stranraer and its railway now that the ferry services are using Cairnryan. The town became a ferry port around 1862 and once the railway came this assured its future. Some memories of trains at this Wigtownshire outpost.

Class 27 27103 arriving at Kilwinning in January 1983 with the 1135 from Glasgow to Stranraer.
27103 was one of the batch fitted with electric train heating for service on the Edinburgh to Glasgow runs in the 1970s.

27007 and 27014 heading out of Glasgow Central with the 1135 to Stranraer during 1984. Two Class 27s were supposed to work these trains but because of troubles especially in the winter when heating boilers very rarely worked this hardly happened so it was an event to be recorded when on this occasion it did happen.
27007 is one of the members of the class preserved and was on the Mid-Hants but suffered a fire.
