Gas turbine 18100

Post by Deepol » Fri Jan 10, 2014 12:19 pm

Official photo of another gas turbine loco ordered by the GWR and also delayed by WW2. This one was built by Metropolitan-Vickers and went into service on the Western Region in 1950. This one was a Co-Co and had a massive power output of 3000hp.
She ran till 1958 when she was returned to MetroVick and converted to a 25Kv electric loco E2001 for testing on the new lines being electrified firstly between Manchester and Crewe and also on the Glasgow North system. I saw her a few times sticking her nose out of Hyndland Depot when that had been completed. She was known as Dracula as she only came out at night but there are daytime photos of her here at Coatbridge Sunnyside.

I'm not too sure of her eventual fate but she was still in traffic in the 1970s.

She seems to have worked the Merchant Venturer from Paddington to Bristol quite frequently. Two BR pics, this one at Paddington.
