Post Office Railway

Post by Deepol » Thu Jul 14, 2016 12:41 pm

One of the more interesting things to come out of the recent Trainspotting Live programmes on BBC4 was a feature of the now closed underground Post Office Railway which carried mail between the London sorting offices from Paddington to Whitechapel. There were nine stations the main one being Mount Pleasant the main sorting hub in the Capital.
It opened in 1927 and the driverless trains ran at a very frequent intensive pattern.
Towards the end of the 1990s Royal Mail as it had become found it was cheaper to use road transport and the line was closed but kept in a workable condition. There are plans to reopen part of it under private enterprise as a tourist attraction.
