PS WAVERLEY 2017

Post by Allan » Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:27 am

Having her first outing this year - currently heading downriver, passing Dumbarton Rock - probably heading for Garvel for her "pre-season make-over".

Once again, let's hope it's a good year for her.

I see she has her AIS Transponder on for the first time this week - perhaps heralding her departure from Garvel?

Yes, departed GCHQ around 1000hrs, sailed down the Firth, went as far as due west of Wemyss Bay where she reversed course and headed back up as far as off Greenock Esplanade where she turned and did it all over again!

Currently passing the Esplanade again - wonder if she’ll go for a third lap?

That'll be a "YES" - currently crossing the Kilcreggan-Gourock line, heading 256 degrees and making a healthy 15.3 knots.

Great pics Paul, thanks for posting.

Very unfortunate, on her first day out this year, she is unable to complete the intended itinerary - would imagine there was a good reason, but don't know if we will ever know what it was.....

Was on board today. We spent 15/20mins extra time taking on water in Greenock. then at Largs after the new passengers had boarded it was announced that Dunoon and Cruise were cancelled because of a boiler problem. We stayed alongside at Largs and departed at scheduled time of 1630hrs. The run home was fine
and the Captain thanked the engineers for their hard work in the engine room in such a hot day too.
Everything AOK for tomorrow, so problem solved. Cost me 31quid to go to Largs tho!!! So have a half price voucher for another trip.

Good to see management addressing the problems yesterday and issuing the vouchers.

Today's cruise to Tighnabruaich appears to have gone as per schedule.

Looks like today's cruise to Lochranza (via Rothesay Largs and Millport) went off without any major problems.

However, reading the data on Marine Traffic, would appear she didn't spend as much time at Lochranza as per timetable?

Today is the 70th. anniversary of Waverley's maiden voyage. Here are a few images of the old girl retracing her steps all those years ago on the 16th. June 1947 on the Craigendoran to Arrochar run. A good crowd was waiting to board at Helensburgh, unfortunately it was a rather dreich day. :D

Hi Colin -

Another website has the comment she was "off-service due to 'generator fault' ".

Interested to see “Magills bus bargain Accompanied child day ticket only one pound” – might use that in a couple of year’s time for my grandson!

Today's, tomorrow's and Sunday's sailings cancelled due to an air pump fault. That makes it three consecutive Fridays lost. Bad luck or poor maintenance ?

Yes Alasdair, appears she has had problems most of this week.

As to your alternative reasons for the problem, only "those in the know" will know, and they are unlikely to tell us if it's the second.....

PS WAVERLEY 2017

Post by alasdairmac » Thu Jul 27, 2017 3:02 pm

Still lying alongside at Largs waiting repairs to her air pump - that's a full week of sailings lost at the hight of the summer season, which very sadly has to be a financial disaster for her. Scrolling info panel on the website making no mention of tomorrow's sail from Glasgow to Rothesay which I was hoping to go on.

PS. Friday's sailing now cancelled too.

Very pleased to see PS WAVERLEY back home at the Science Centre.

She left Largs this morning around 1130hrs, quickly got up to 15 knots and maintained that speed as far as Gourock.

Thereafter, speed reduced to 9/10 knots, did a 360-degree loop off GOT, and had a very brief stop (speed down to 0.2 knots) at CHQ. Speed very quickly increased to 15 knots by the time she passed Garvel Dry-dock and maintained that until passing Erskine Bridge, thereafter dropping to 14 knots up to the Cart Estuary, and then 9/10 knots up to the Science Centre, arriving 1445hrs.

My conclusion - air pump/mechanical issues dealt with, back to normal – pretty good for a seventy-year-old!
