Commonwealth Games Flotilla

Post by SCameron » Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:54 pm

Paddle Steamer Waverley is now scheduled to escort a flottila of approximately 250 sail and motor yachts and other craft between Greenock and Glasgow on the fourth day of the Commonweath Games event, Saturday 26th July 2014. Waverley will sail from Greenock (0930) and Helensburgh (1000) upriver to the city arriving at 1230 with the flottila following. She will depart Glasgow at 1300 sailing back down through the the flotilla as it comes upriver and welcoming it as she goes. I guess there could be more steam used in the whistle that day than in the engine:)

Sounds great Stuart. Need to keep my eyes open for tickets going on sale.

Do WEL any idea where she will be berthed in Glasgow during the games as I understand that the Science Centre berth will be within the BBC secure zone and therefore out if bounds for public access.

Alisdair

Tickets now on sail - adult fare for the Greenock (0930 returning 1600) sailing is £25.

Note she will not be sailing from Glasgow on 27th and 28th July and 2nd Aug due to CG restrictions. Alternative sailing are being offered.

Not aware of any berth changes so far

Just a note regarding Waverley's involvement with the flotilla. All passengers have been offered a refund or alternate cruise on the ship as this sailing has now been cancelled. The Harbour Master has implemented a river closure due to the number of yachts scheduled to take part. I am unsure of the Waverley's role in the flotilla and whether she will be berthed at the Science Centre, allowed to sail without passengers or not on the river at all and docked in Greenock. I must admit I was a little disappointed, whilst I can understand the safety reasons, it seems a little unfair that on such a historic day and based on the history of the ship and it being the last paddle steamer on the river she is not able to carry passengers. On a positive note I am looking forwards to my cruise on Sunday around Skipness Castle and across the Kilbrannan Sound.

Apart from MV Cruiser, and some small sailing boats and kayaks, does anyone have information on any other flotilla participants? For example, are any tall ships planned to participate, naval vessels, survey ships, foreign visitors, etc.?

The Flotilla has a special web page where some of the boats are featured - with a tracking system to watch their progress to Glasgow. Also on that website are links to the flotilla Facebook and Twitter pages where more of the boats are featured.

http://www.flotilla2014.org.uk/boats.php

More information on participants will be released soon.

Thanks. I know of that website, and that is the main reason I asked the question. The event is just more than a week away, and the participant list stands at 10 sailing vessels and 10 kayakers! At this rate, it's hardly going to attract folk from Gourock, never mind other parts of the country.

A few days ago I was concerned if we could be done under the Trade Descriptions Act for advertising a “flotilla” of ships.
Fortunately, couldn’t find a definition which determined a minimum number of ships which constituted a Flotilla.

Like others, I noted at that time that there was to be about a dozen sailing vessels, and some kayakers.
However, very pleased to note that according to the “Flotilla” website noted above, there are approx. 250 vessels listed there.

A flotilla – think we have one – bring it on!

Aye, that's a better showing, and it will now allow people to make a decision on whether they want to attend the event! There are far too many yachts for my liking, so it will probably be the East Fortune Air Show for me, but I can always catch some of the more interesting items during arrivals or departures.

Looks like it's CalMac's new hybrid ferry "Lochinvar" which has the honour of leading the flotilla upriver.
