ss Manora - 1883 built by William Denny & Brothers Dumbarton

Post by nickmessinger » Fri Sep 12, 2014 9:57 am

Good morning!
I am researching the British India steamship the ss Manora, launched in 1883.....
Information on this ship is proving sparse! She's listed as a cargo/passenger vessel but
does anyone know her passenger capacity?
Also, did she make scheduled calls at Karachi in the early 1890s?

On behalf of an American author friend, I am endeavouring to identify a suitable BI passenger
ship, dfeparting London and calling at Karachi in 1892. If Manora is unsuitable, I am open to
offers on another vessel!

My specialisation is P&O - having served with them from 1961-1972, as a deck officer - last ship ss Chusan.

A very warm welcome to the site Nick.
No doubt the members will have information regarding itineraries but in the meantime the passenger accommodation is listed in the Denny List.
76 1st class, 30 2nd class.

Hello I have found a passenger list for the s s manora , commander was a W A Burkitt . It left the UK visiting Naples Port Said Colombo madras vizagapatam Calcutta Rangoon and Moulmein .i count about 90 passengers including infants nurses Ayahs etc . This is outward journey maybe there were other destinations for the voyage back . The map on the back of the list Kurachee highlighted in black so it is likely . If you send your email address I'll send you a photo ...dave
