PS WAVERLEY 2016

Post by Allan » Mon Apr 18, 2016 12:14 pm

Noticed today she has her AIS system switched on, I think for the first time this year.

Here's hoping for a good season ahead for the old girl.

Having spent a couple of weeks in Garvel dry-dock, WAVERLEY out for a run-about in the estuary, currently doing 15.7knots and about to pass Inverkip on her port side.

Looks like PS WAVERLEY took the short-cut to Greenock - was hoping to see her on the Greenock Web-cam but was obviously too late............

Waverley at Lochranza Pier yesterday, with CalMac's Loch Tarbert on the adjacent slip. There was a good passenger load for what was a magnificent day's sailing. Flat calm and clear blue skies - the Clyde at it wonderful best. And the forecast is looking good for her adventures north this week and next; I'm just sorry that I won't be able to be on board.

Does anyone have any idea what caused Waverley to abandon her sail to Portree and Gairloch this morning? She turned back to Kyle when abeam Inverarish, didn't even make it to Portree, and after what appears to have been a brief stop at Kyle of Lochalsh is now (15:00 BST) heading south off Eigg.

PS: now appears to be circumnavigating the Small Isles. Could this be a sheltered water alternative if it's been a bit too lumpy in the Inner Sound and the Minch?

At last, can tick something of my bucket list – going for a sail on the WAVERLEY on Sunday.

I’ve had this in mind for quite a few years (you know what they say about good intentions)……
I’m told (!) it’s at least 40 years since my last trip, I know it’s more 50 years since my first, at which time some of the shipyards were still operating.

Looking forward to it, although the weather doesn’t augur well.

If anyone else is going and recognises the handsome guy on the left, give us a gentle tap on the shoulder….

Due to computer problems, been off-line for a few days.

Enjoyed my day on PS WAVERLEY, although the weather could have been kinder - dull, cool and very windy for the first half, then a gradual improvement on the homeward journey.

Very aware of old memories resurrecting themselves- some good, some not so good.

Was able to get some pictures of the journey, will share later once I get full connectivity.

Glad to be back, after an extended absence due to computer problems, then aggravated by personal and work issues which regrettably precluded time available for Clyde Maritime…..

Thought it appropriate to make my “re-entry” (!) on my favourite thread…..

The Old Lady, having completed a quick session at Liverpool and a longer session in Bristol channel, is now on the South Coast and currently safely based in Southampton - thereafter will be moving to the Thames.

Having now completed her excursions to English waters, P S WAVERLEY departed Whitstable around 1945hrs on Monday 10th October, arriving at Weymouth at 1100hrs this morning.

After a brief stop, she departed Weymouth 1400hrs today – next stop Glasgow ETA 0200hrs Thursday 13th October.

Her current course and speed indicate passing The Lizard 0100hrs Wednesday morning, then a further 2 hours steaming before turning due north and beginning the final run home.

Not the best day’s sailing, up until 1400hrs speed seldom more than 9 knots – easterly winds (22knots) prevalent in the area.

However, making better speed now, currently showing 11.7knots, by 1700hrs(BST) will be about 12 miles west of St David’s in south-west Wales.

Having passed west of St David’s, PS WAVERLEY turned to head north-east for about 40 miles, parallel to the coastline – then headed east and now (1900hrs BST) appears to be turning into Fishguard Bay - certainly not “on course” for Glasgow.

Will continue to monitor, not sure whether this is for shelter in the bay, or she intends to dock somewhere.
