PS WAVERLEY 2018

Post by Allan » Wed Apr 18, 2018 1:54 pm

Yes folks, it’s that time of year again – PS WAVERLEY left the Science Centre this morning at 100hrs and arrived at Garvel Drydock around 1230hrs for her annual service, wash & brush-up.

I see she got up to a healthy 13.5 knots approaching Port Glasgow - that must be a good sign, after being moored for six months at the Science Centre.

I wish her all the best for 2018.

Left Garvel Drydock Tuesday 1st May, temporally docked at CHQ, then headed off back to the Science Centre, but(worryingly) was assisted the whole journey by tugs BATTLER and BRUISER.

She was towed back to Greenock yesterday, anyone know what's up?

PS WAVERLEY exited dry-dock mid-afternoon yesterday, spent last night moored up at CHQ.

Set off at 0930hrs BST this morning, got to about a mile west of the CAPTAYANNIS before turning downriver, currently making a healthy 14.5 knots.

Now passing Shieldhall under her own steam and unassisted so it looks like all must be well with her rudder. And what a weather forecast for this weekend’s sailings ! Should be a great start to the season.

Great day for PS WAVERLEY – weather could not be better.

Tracking her on Marine Traffic, appears to be problems with her transponder –
Departing Science Centre in the morning, no readings until she is past Erskine Bridge, so “straight line” course which shows she “jumped on-land” and went along Glasgow Road and Dumbarton Road, then went back on the river after the Erskine Bridge.

Same situation after:-
a) departing CHQ – “overland” course until past Gourock.
b) departing Largs – “0verland” course until approaching Dunoon
c) Departing Dunoon on return journey – overland course to CHQ, missing out Largs

However, main question – on her return journey, would appear she had to have a second attempt to dock at Dunoon – anyone know why?

Looks like whatever the problem is it’s still there as she disappeared off the Cock of Arran this afternoon after she left Lochranza, not to reappear until she was just north of Toward.

Looking forward to my sail on her tomorrow all the way to sunny Rothesay.

I did Alan, thanks. What a brilliant day, the river at its very very best, but I have to say a really disappointing load on the old girl; couldn't have been more than 300 on board. If we want to keep her going, people are going to have to turn out and support her, and if they cannot do that on a day like yesterday then one wonders

PS WAVERLEY first visit of the season Sat. 26th. May 2018 at Helensburgh on a beautiful day. She had to go around a second time and approach the pier due to a heaving line not being retrieved ashore due to a stiff offshore breeze.

HI Paul,
Was on "The Splash" yesterday when Waverley passed on her way downriver. When she got approximately abeam of Gourock Pier she turned hard to starboard and headed back across to Kilcreggan, where she berthed. For all the world it looked as though "somebody" had forgotten she was supposed to stop at Kilcreggan. Any ideas?? Thereafter she resumed her downriver passage.

No idea David, seems a bit strange, you would have thought when clear of the bouyed channel she would have headed over to Kilcreggan via the Whiteforeland buoy.

Thanks Paul,
My only other thought was possibly a medevac, but in that case why not Gourock? There is probably a quicker response time for that at Gourock than at Kilcreggan I would have thought.
