CalMac's Glen Sannox

Post by alasdairmac » Fri Aug 31, 2018 12:24 pm

Do we have any "insiders" who can throw some light on the problems with the new Glen Sannox?

I have heard rumours, from someone I would consider reliable, that the design of the LNG tankage has run into certification issues with the Health & Safety Executive and MCGA surveyors. Seemingly, designs of similar vessels built abroad have had the tanks located above the waterline so that any leaks could be vented directly overboard, but that “Glen Sannox” has them down in the depths of her hull. The authorities were also reported to be requiring that only crew essential to LNG refuelling could be onboard when it was taking place, giving rise to the problem of where do the rest of the crew spend that night. If that's true, then it sounds like a serious design deficiency, which should have been discovered in discussion with the certification authorities long before the design was finalised.

Appreciate the point Alasdair – perhaps a case of technology advancing faster than logic and comprehension…
