Short Belfast

Post by Deepol » Wed Sep 26, 2012 1:14 pm

Ten of these turboprop transports were built by Shorts at Belfast for the RAF, the first flying around the middle of 1964. They had a very short career all being withdrawn by 1976-77. Some found work as civilian freighters but I think are all withdrawn now. One is preserved in original state at the RAF Museum at Cosford.
I always think they were overshadowed by the Hercules/ C130.

They had Classical names. This is Theseus.

Lovely publicity shot of G-BEPS of HeavyLift Transport. This company evidently bought seven of the ten Belfasts built. Sadly the company is now out of existence.
Some more photos courtesy Allan Earnley.
