MILLENIUM DOS / NEW GLORY

Post by Francis GIB » Sat Jan 14, 2012 8:01 am

140112: Last evening, at around 2005, the fast ferry MILLENIUM DOS (Algeciras-Ceuta) was in collision with the East-bound Bulk Carrier NEW GLORY. Two slight casualties are reported and these were airlifted by Helicopter. The damage appears extensive. Vessels attending the incident were tracked via AIS. However, there is still very little info as to the cause and the status of both ships. We'll try and update this info as and when available...

Hi Daniel,

That is a mess, and they are very lucky to survive such a collision. You say the bulker was heading East, and the ferry was struck on her starboard side, which means she was going from Gib to Africa, and, as such, she would be the giving way vessel, so it looks as though she tried to shoot across the bow of the bulker instead of altering to starboard and going round her stern. A BAD choice!

The ferry's actual route was Algeciras - Ceuta and yes, you watch tem many a times shoot across the bows of moving ships....its a wonder that this has not happened before.

As Daniel has commented, it has to be seen to be believed what these fast ferries get up to especially if more than one coincide in the exit and entry into Algeciras or travelling parallel to each other in the Bay/Strait. Once they are clear of the harbour, they will start racing towards their destination and it does not matter which way they are going as long as they get there fast. Thus, on more than one occasion we have seen ferries going to Tangier cross the bows of ferries going to Ceuta, and both travelling at around the same speed, so no real margin of safety!

The ferry MILENIUM DOS at the GibDock shipyard in Gibraltar for repairs on the 18th January. She arrived the evening before. As can be seen in the pic, the damage had been covered up.

Workers beginning to cut some of the jagged edges around the hole. Note the cut pueces on the wharf and in the lorry.
