On July 28th 1909 she foundered off the South African coast in a severe storm after sailing from Durban for the UK on the 27th July. No trace of the ship was ever found except apparently for a lifebelt washed on to a beach in New Zealand in 1912. All 211 passengers and crew lost their lives.
However the wreck was found on July 14th 1999 off the Cape Coast in an upright position resting on the ocean bed indicating that it had sunk quite rapidly. Explorer Emlyn Brown initially declined to declare the exact location of the wreck for fear of plundering. It was in a position surrounded by strong currents and at a depth that made conventional diving techniques and equipment unsuitable.
