BARON STRANRAER 1929 - Lithgows

BARON STRANRAER as ADELFOTIS II in her final resting place after grounding at South Shields on 20/1/1963. She was broken up in situ.

That's an interesting picture of her, Mike, somewhat different to the normal ones you see.

I am ashamed to admit that I have never delved into that particular section of Ron's Site, Mike.

As you say, some great pictures of her.

I think the local firm of Trembles did ok breaking her up as she lay, mostly with Army Surplus Equipment!

When I started with Norther Gas in 1968 we had one of their Cranes in our Pipe Yard. I think it was an AEC Matador 6 x 6 with a Coles crane and I remember it being around for a long time, before being replaced by a Iron Fairy.

Launched This Day 17/9/1929 by Lithgows Port Glasgow, Yard No 832

January 1963, on passage Middlesborough to Antwerp, put into the Tyne with a broken steering gear. Struck the Black Midden Rocks at North Shields and swung across the river ending up on the sands. She was a total loss and broken up where she lay
