As I understand it, CASTOR was built to serve as a naval communications vessel in time of war and was listed in the Netherlands Navy as A 810.

She carried a 7.6cm canon on the foredeck and a pair of Oerlikon double-barreled 20mm anti-aircraft guns on the afterdeck. Crew members trained annually at Den Helder.

She also had additional tanks for 70,000 litres of fuel and 35,000 litres fresh water - only to be used in case of war - which would give her sufficient autonomy to reach South Africa without stopping, and tasked to carry the Dutch Government and Royal Family to safety.

Thanks for that David.

It is all in Dutch, an oh so difficult language to attempt to comprehend.
Nice pictures.

How though, do you imagine she could remain autonomous with all that weaponry. Scarcely a Q ship.
In those circumstances she would have a very heavy naval escort, and probably would not be too fast, taking all their booty and beloveds with them.
Hence all the extra water capacity.
