My Old Man went to sea after passing through Gravesend Sea School on January 9th, 1948, aged 17. I have just visited my old Mum, and I have his discharge book here with me now. He died nearly 20 years ago, and I miss him still. He came ashore aged 30 and promptly got my then 16 year old mum pregnant, and he never went back to Sea. He missed it for the rest of his life.
So, in this "Certificate of Discharge" book I have the names of all the ships he sailed in between 1948 and 1952 and whilst he was a great storyteller, he wasn't much of photographer ! Does anyone have any photographs of any of the vessels named below ?? I'd love to be able to see the very ships that he talked so much about.

Apparently, or so I am told, that after 1952 they stopped using books and you got papers instead...I have a couple of them, my sister has the rest. There is one ship that he sailed with whenever he could, as she did a run down to the West Indies and then on to the States. This must have been in the mid to late fifties, and she remained his favourite. He referred to her as " The Old Madonna", but she could of been just The Madonna. If anyone can shed any light on her, or any of those listed above, I shall forever be in your debt.

There are about 8 or 9 possible vessels in the period in question under the name ‘Madonna’. If there are any further snippets of information, dates, durations, ports, or suchlike, that might help.
Sometimes seagoing appointments were recorded on a separate paper document, as opposed to being entered into the Seaman’s Continuous Certificate of Discharge (Discharge Book) and these generally contained the same type of information, e.g. Name, Age, Birthplace, Capacity, Date and Place of Engagement, Date of & Place of Discharge, Signatures of Official/master, etc. As far as I am aware, Discharge Books were never done away with, and certainly not during the time of your late Dad’s seagoing career.
If you do not have the above accesses let me know and in that case I will assemble the details for you from the official records. All part of the friendly ClydeMaritime service !

(Ledbury was a well-known vessel amongst my island's seafarers, including my own grandfather)

I can't remember much else about the Madonna, but I think she was one of the "lend-lease" or Liberty ships that managed to get through unscathed and I know that he sailed in her several times, and always (I Think) to the West Indies, especially Jamaica, which he loved. He came ashore in '61, and she's not mentioned in the discharge book that that I have, so she must've been at sea between '52 and '61....the more I think about it, the more I'm sure him telling me that he sailed on a few of the old Liberty ships, and she was his favourite so I hope that helps..

MADONNA from what you write is likely to be the 1942 completion by Todd-Bath, Portland as OCEAN GLORY, she became CLAN MACBETH of Clan Line 1948-1959 then MADONNA 1959-1961 owned by Wheelock, Marden who I think were Hong Kong based, maybe she got a charter to one of the lines serving the West Indies.

Meantime, look after her ladyship and you get the hoovering, ironing, cleaning, shopping, cooking, washing up, laundry, etc., as attended to.

One is of the older steamship and the other two are of the later motorship - which I think is the right one.
BRONTE ... lower 2 photos are the SD14 type much later than this period, and the top one is the 1919 by McMillan lost 1939.
The one we seek is the 1930 by Cammell Laird as BENEDICT then took name BRONTE 1948-1950 only, so photos under that name may be rare.
As you know as a man of letters, there were several Bronte sisters .....
The ATHELCREST you show is the 1957 version from Lithgows, so we need to keep hunting!
Will be the lowest of the CLAN MACBETH's that you show, as this is clearly an Ocean class.
