HMS Decoy
Destroyer, Daring Class - D.106
Ordered as Dragon, renamed in June 1946 and laid down 22/9/1946. Launched by Yarrow Shipbuilders Scotstoun, Yard No 1845, on 29/03/1949. Decommissioned 2007 and fate not known
2830t standard; 3580t deep load
390ft oa x 43ft x 13ft 7in mean deep load
2-shaft double-reduction geared turbines, 2 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, oil, 54,000shp giving 34.7 Knots
6 x 4.5in/45 QF Mk V (3 x 2), 6 x 40mm Bofors (3 x 2), 10 x 21in TT (2 x 5), and a single squid
Crew 278-330
Completed 28/4/1953
14/6/1953 Coronation Review
1956 took part in the Suez landings in 1956. The main bombardment was carried out by the 3 Darings of the Mediterranean fleet Duchess, Diamond and Decoy. The bombardment was carried out by the combined firepower of 18 x 4.5" guns and lasted about 30 mins. She had on board a Royal Artillery Officer who co-ordinated fall of shot from an army spotter plane. The Egyptians had Russian T34 tanks dug in on the beaches buried to turret level. Several of these tanks were taken out by the destroyer’s accurate fire, making the way clear for the landing troops to go ashore.
4/9/1957 ran aground on Portland breakwater
1959 modernised with extra deck housing instead of torpedo tubes
July 1960-October 1962 she carried out Seacat trials
1964 West Indies
August 1969 paid off for disposal
December 1969 sold to Peru and refitted at Cammell Lairds including the fitting of Exocet missiles
April 1973 commissioned as BAP FERRE
1975-6 Squid mortar removed and helicopter pad added
1977-78 2 x twin Oto Melara 40L70 installed

Trials photo. I was taken to task and corrected by a Daring Class expert as it's after the 1959 refit.

she lost her two sets of torpedo tubes in the refit with some new superstructure occupying the space of the after bank. The final Peruvian reconstruction did not add to her beauty.

Not sure whether she has actually been scrapped now as Peru now has another FERRÉ (PM 211), the former South Korean corvette ROKS GYEONGJU.
