The stranding of Walrus occurred whilst in tow for subsequent preparations for her intended conversion to a WAIR escort at Chatham Dockyard where more of these works were done than elsewhere and all in Naval Dockyards. The WAIR was an extensive conversion turning these elderly destroyers into more capable anti aircraft escorts with 2 X 2 new 4" mounts and all torpedoes removed.

In two of the images above her sister Wryneck appears which had a WAIR conversion Sept 1939 - April 1940, the only one in Gibraltar.
Wryneck and the D class Diamond were both sunk 27 April 1941 in sustained air attacks during the Greece evacuation with catastrophic loss of life amongst their men.
Raid - Trade - Aid
Thats all folks. Sean. E28
