HMS Shark
Destroyer, S,T,U,V and W Class – G.03
HnoMS Svenner – G.03
Laid down 5/11/1941, and launched by Scotts Greenock, Yard No 601, on 1/6/1943. Torpedoed and sunk 6/6/1944
1780-1810t actual; 2505 -2545 deep load
362ft 9in oa x 35ft 8in x 14ft 6in mean deep load
2-shaft Parsons geared turbines, 2 Admiralty, 3-drum boilers, oil, 40,000shp giving 36.75 knots
4 x 4.7in/45 QF Mk IX (4 x 1), 2 x 40mm Bofors (1 x 2), 10 x 20mm AA guns, and 8 x 21in TT (2 x 4)
Crew 225

8/3/1944 lent to the Royal Norwegian Navy on completion and was probably not commissioned in the RN
11/3/1944 commissioned as HNoMS Svenner
Transferred to the Channel to prepare for the Normandy landings as part of Bombarding Force D covering Sword Beach
6/6/1944 sunk at dawn off Sword Beach, Normandy, while supporting the British Army landings. She was attacked by the German torpedo boats T 28, Möwe, Falke and Jaguar, operating out of Le Harve. She was the only allied ship to be sunk by German Naval activity on the morning of June 6th and was hit by two torpedoes. She was struck amidships and exploded, breaking in two and sinking rapidly. 32 Norwegian and one British crew were killed and 185, including 15 wounded, were rescued by HMS Swift.
