HMS Defender
Destroyer, Daring Class - D.114
Ordered as Dogstar, renamed in June 1946 and laid down 22/3/1949. Launched by Alexander Stephen & Sons Glasgow, Yard No 609, on 27/7/1950. Sold to White, St David’s Harbour on 10/5/1972 for BU
2830t standard; 3580t deep load
390ft oa x 43ft x 13ft 7in mean deep load
2-shaft double-reduction geared turbines, 2 Forster Wheeler boilers, oil, 54,000shp giving 34.7 Knots
6 x 4.5in/45 QF Mk V (3 x 2), 6 x 40mm Bofors (3 x 2), 10 x 21in TT (2 x 5), and a single squid
Crew 278-330

Completed 5/12/1952
15/6/1953 Coronation Review at Spithead
16/6/1953 sailed for the Far East
Took part in the Malayan Emergency Operations bombarding the Johor coast and sailing up the Jahor River
20/12/1954 arrived back at Chatham
1956 temporary transfer to the Mediterranean for the Suez Crisis
1958-59 modernised at Chatham with extra deck housing instead of her aft torpedo tubes
1959 joined the 2nd Destroyer Squadron on General Service
1961-65 Reserve at Chatham
1962 refit at Rosyth losing her forward torpedo tubes
1965 re-commissioned following refit and joined the 23rd Escort Squadron
24/8/1965 sailed from Portsmouth for the Mediterranean
1966 deployed to St Vincent in the Caribbean to cover a political crisis
1967 re-commisioned for Home and Far East Service and covered the withdrawal from Aden
September 1969 paid off at Devonport and Listed for disposal
1972 used for whipping trials with underwater explosion tests in the River Forth before being scrapped
