Launched by Scotts Greenock, Yard No 524, on 5/6/1924 as a Passenger Cargo Vessel for A. Holt & Coy. (Ocean Steam Ship Co Blue Funnel). Torpedoed & Sunk on 14/5/1943

315.7 ft x 48.2 ft x 21.5 ft
6-cyl. 4 S.C.S. A. (640 x 1300mm) oil engine (Scott No. 596), made by Akt. Burmeister & Wains Maskin-og-Skibsbyggeri, Copenhagen. 1,650 BHP giving 11 knots

Delivered: 10/8/1924
27/4/1940 requisitioned by the Government fitted with Defensive equipment and continued her normal service
November 1941 rescued survivours frrom the german Raider Kormoran and HMAS Sydney
October 1942 used as a transport from Australia to New Quinea
January 1943 she was loaned to Australia for conversion to a Hospital Ship
March 1943 transported wounded from Townsville to Brisbane followed by wounded from Port Moresby to Brisbane
12/5/1943left Sydney with the 2/12th Field Ambulance for New Quinea
14/5/1943 at 0400hrs she was torpedoed about 50 miles east north-east of Brisbane while on passage from Sydney to New Quinea. There were no patients on board at the time.
A single torpedo hit her near the engine room and her bunkers exploded. Of the 332 persons on board, only 64 survived and only one of the nursing sisters out of 12 survived. These survivors spent 35 hours on rafts before being rescued.
The ship was well marked as a Hospital ship and lit up and her sinking was regarded as an atrocity. After the war the submarine was identified as I-177 and her captain was tried and convicted as a war criminal
