Challenger - 1984 HMS - Seabed Operations Vessel

Post by Dennis Maccoy » Sat Jan 26, 2019 8:21 pm

The Seabed Operations Vessel Challenger was launched by Scott-Lithgow on 19 May 1981 and handed over to the RN on 12 July 1984, completion having been delayed by problems with electrical cabling. Decommissioned in 1990 she was sold in 1993 to be converted for use in decontaminating hazardous waste, but this did not proceed, and she was laid up until acquired for conversion to the seabed mining vessel Ya Toivo. She commenced diamond mining activity off Namibia in 2000.
She’s seen here in Portsmouth in 1987 and laid up on the Tyne in 1994 and 1995.
