The New Riverside Museum and Kelvin Harbour
The New Riverside Museum and Kelvin Harbour
Post by Richard D » Sun Jan 09, 2011 9:38 pm
A Westminster Dredging grab dredger will leave the Mersey on Monday morning and begin work in the Kelvin as soon as she arrives. It is the first time the Kelvin has been dredged since 1974. I think there will actually be two dredgers working together - but I can't find my notes of the exact information on that. The area at the confluence is being dredged to 3m below datum and the Glenlee berth to 8m. Once the dredging is completed Luddon Contruction will start building a slipway, fairly close to and on the same alignment as the slipway where Waverley was launched. A small pontoon harbour will be built adjacent to the slipway where Seaforce and the Sea Cadets wil be based along with Harbour Ferry No.8 and other historic boats belonging to the Trust. The new Govan Ferry will also operate from here as soon as the Museum opens in May.

Do you know if any dredging of the river (Clyde) bed south of the new Glenlee berth is to be carried out?

The only dredging being done by the CMT is as described - ie the Glenlee berth and Kelvin Harbour. The City Council will be doing a small capital dredge immediately in front of the new pontoon that they are planning on the opposite bank. Clydeport created a new catchment pit off Yorkhill Quay last year, but as far as I know that is all they intend to do in this area. I have attached a chart extract showing the dredge areas.
I presume you are referring to Waverley's needs. Andy O'Brien came to the last meeting of the River Users' Group in the City Chambers and explained his concerns about the need to take Waverley past the Museum site at a considerable speed, both to allow for the turn into the Science Centre and also to avoid the missiles from the housing estate on the south side (apologies to ardent south siders - but its a fact). This is one of the reasons why Clydeport have insisted that the Council's new pontoon is placed hard against the bank and not out in the river on piles - hence the need for dredging near the bank.

Thanks for that - could be 'interesting' especially if the side flow from the Kelvin changes after dredging - time will tell I suppose.

Lantic Bay is due in first in a "day or so" to do the Kelvin, sub contracted from Wyre Marine, then W D Mersey will arrive in about 10 days to remove the kelvin spoil from a temporary dump and excavate the Glenlee berth. Luddons are now on site to start the slipway construction.

Admiral Day seems to have had its AIS switched off for over a year. Very strange.

2) Are there any lecture theatres in the building?

Museum opening date not yet fixed, and
Yes, there's a large education room that can be used for lectures. I'm not involved in any way with the museum, but have asked around to get this info.
By the way, W D Mersey is on her way, ETA Glasgow 2000 hrs today

I've heard that tugs are due at Yorkhill for 0930, but those with their ear closer to the water may have more accurate timings.
