Ishbel Mac Askill

Sad to hear the news that Ishbel Mac Askill has passed away, a sad loss.

Ishbel was such a cheery soul and she had the purest voice you could ever hope to hear.
Here's a video of her singing Tuireadh Iain Ruadh

Ishbel on Youtube

And appropriate for today, An ataraireachd àrd (the high surge of the sea)

An ataraireachd àrd

RIP Ishbel.

Ishbel Mac Askill R.I.P.

How awful, I have been listening to the Gaelic programmes on and off most of today and they have not until now announced this terrible loss to Gaeldom. Cannot imagine that glorious voice stilled forever. One of my own favourites, although anything that lady sang was before long a favourite, was the second one you mentioned - An ataraireachd àrd and the video that accompanies it is so appropriate.

Rest in Peace, Ishbel, you inspired so many and gave so much the music of our land, never to be forgotten.

I don't pretend to understand a word of what she is singing, but what a stunningly beautiful voice. She will be a sad loss to Scottish traditional music.

Sad indeed for myself as I first got to know her as a youngster in Stornoway in 56/57 and then in Glasgow whilst pursuing our respective careers. A sad loss, RIP Ishbel you were an inspiration.
