A couple of shots of two of them outbound; RIO MANAMO after canting at KG5 in May 1974 and RIO CARONI heading out from GTQ past Customhouse in June 1974. They were German built, coming from Deutsch Werft in 1959 and 1957 respectively, launched in two sections as far as I can gather.

Colin: Glasgow ...The Port at Work
Post by Angus Mac Kinnon » Wed Feb 29, 2012 1:13 pm
The deed took place on 4th August 1996 when the large 6,500 tons structure was being transported downriver by barge and struck the underside of the Bridge a good smack, damaging the Bridges underside and the Rig’s Drilling Tower.
Incredible, considering all the experts involved, and there were many in attendance for this long-planned operation, that a thorough understanding of the critical aspects of such a specialised operation did not prevent such an occurrence, i.e. clearance from underside of the Bridge to top of water, the tidal conditions at time of passing, overall height of the structure including the barge above water level, and any other pertinent aspects.
The incident closed the Bridge to all traffic whilst the extent damage was assessed.
On 22nd August the bridge was opened to pedestrians and bicycles
On 30th August the bridge was opened to motor cars and motor cycles
On 22nd December the bridge was opened up to Heavy Goods Vehicles
The cost of remedial repairs to the bridge amounted to £ 3.6 million
The cost from loss of tolls revenue was said to amount to £ 700,000
Tolls on this bridge were abandoned from 31st March 2006, resulting in an annual cost saving to the Mac Kinnon family of £1.20 in respect to their annual visit to the tropical sunshine and shimmering white beaches of the fabled Isle of Eriskay !

The cargo in the container is one of the spiral wound POD steam generators made by Babccck at Renfrew for the AGR nuclear power stations. This one would be going to either Heysham or Hartlepool. The PODs were manufactured in a specially built 'clean' factory at Renfrew. The picture below shows the top end of a POD and the top of the coil. Winding the coils was a very complex operation which at that time (mid to late 1970s) defied all attempts at automation. The operation had to be done manually which made it very time consuming and, obviously, expensive. After the completion of the AGR construction programme the multi-million pound clean production nuclear factory was little used, although it enjoyed something of an 'Indian summer' when it was utilised for applying and testing the integrity of the hastelloy corrosion-resistant lining of the huge ducts built for the Flue Gas Desulphurisation plant that was retrofitted to Drax Power Station in the early 1990s. Since the Babcock manufacturing facilities were sold by the then owners, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, to an industrial property development company in 1998 they have changed ownership several times, the specialised clean manufacturing bays having been used for a short lived venture into manufacturing plastic cases for PCs and latterly storing furniture - sad end for a once state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.Colin Campbell wrote:Aberthaw Fisher in Princes Dock having just loaded a Pickfords Heavy tractor and load. Her stern was against the south wall in the region of Govan Town hall

She was built in 1959 by Kockums at Malmo as the Blandford Shipping Co's BIDEFORD and went to breakers at Kaohsiung in November 1975 so did not last long after her Clyde visit.

When did that happen, Peter? The absence of any Blue Flues on that wall, and City or Clan ships on the other side, would suggest it was in recent times, when these happy days had come to an end?

Thanks, Peter. That would explain it, the British mercantile marine was in serious decline by the 80s, shipyards shut down all over the place, docks and wharves more or less empty of shipping. Glad the wee Newark boatie survived her dive.
