The last time any of them came down was during the great storm of Jan 1969. I was home on leave and on the morning following the storm I had to go to the dentist in PG by bus. One of the cranes on the Great Harbour fitting out berth had blown down across an RFA supply boat moored alongside. Fortunately it had blown down across No.4 hold, just missing all the accommodation; so, a very lucky miss
A second crane had blown down into the main dock, not causing any further damage.
The other damages caused around PG, Greenock, and Gourock are sights never to be forgotten. One young girl was killed just around the corner from us in Margaret Street when a chimney head from the next building crashed down through the flat roof of the house she was staying in, and killed her in bed.
