HMS Tarpon
Destroyer, R Class, 8th order – F.72, F.22, F.79, H.96
Laid down 12/4/1916 and launched by John Brown, Clydebank, Yard No 457, on 10/3/1917. Sold 4/8/1927 to Cashmore, Newport for scrapping
975t normal; 1173t deep load
84.1m x 8.1m x 2.7m
2 shaft Brown-Curtis turbines, 3 Yarrow boilers, oil, 27,000shp giving 36 knots.
3 x 4in 45 cal QF Mk IV, 1 x 2pdr pom-pom, 4 x 21in TTs (2 x 2)
Crew 82

With her large area propellers she made a trial run at 37.5 knots
Completed 26/4/1917 as a minelayer, 40 H mines or 50 Elia, with no after gun, tubes or sweep gear and leaving one depth charge. Minelaying and gun configuration were interchangeable within 24 hrs. Based at Rosyth with the 13th DF attached to the Battlecruiser Fleet
July 1917 while returning from a minelaying operation she struck a mine off Dunkirk and towed there for temporary repairs. It was six months before she returned to service.
