Site responsiveness

Post by admin » Fri Dec 28, 2018 11:53 am

Hi all

A couple of you have reported some problems getting logged in or, or the site hanging when uploading posts. I'm aware of the issue, but not too sure what's causing it. The server's hosts have confirmed that the server loadings are normal, so it's not that.

I did notice though that the although the site is set up to use https protocols, the cookies weren't set up to use that - so I'm hoping that might have been the problem. So when accessing the site, please try to use https://forums.clydemaritime.co.uk

Please post any further issues here and I'll see what can be done.

In the short to medium term though, I'm exploring the possibility of moving the forum onto another platform, possibly tapatalk forums. Main advantage of that would be that they are responsible for the updates and management of the database/forum etc. It would possibly be a bit cheaper to run as well - costs would be offset through sponsored adverts, similar to what is on the forum at the moment.

As I say, it's not confirmed yet, and there's also the "if it ain't broke etc..." but as you'll be aware I'm not on the site very often these days due to various other commitments, so it would be one less thing to worry about maintaining and keeping up to date (and phpbb which this forum uses, is a bit of a pain to update, with no guarantee that it will still be working after each update!!!)

As always though, thanks to everyone for their ongoing contributions - it would be good to see more folk posting though, even if it's only one or two posts. There's lots of folk who have registered, but have never even said hello, or made a single post.

Cheers

Stuart

I've just changed to use https: instead of the default http and the speed of the sight is night and day! Viewing with http was really slow. Hopefully this little change will make things run smoother! Thanks for the work keeping this all going.

That's good to know :)

I suspect it was the wrong cookie settings causing the issue. All my sites on the server were changed to use https settings back in the autumn and I forgot that it might have affected the forum. Fingers crossed it's all good now though.
