Princess Maud 1933 - Landing Ship Infantry (H)

Troopship
Launched by William Denny & Brothers Dumbarton, Yard No 1265, on 19/12/1933 as a Passenger cargo vessel for the London Midland & Scottish Railway Ltd. Scrapped in Bilbao, arriving 13/1/1973
2886 grt
Twin screw, steam, two stage single reduction geared turbine, 750 nhp giving 20 knots
Armed and carried 6 LCAs

Completed February 1934
10/9/1939 left Southampton on her first trip as a Trooper
12/12/1939 switched to Dover and Boulogne
30/5/1940 left Dover for Dunkirk and while off the French Coast was hit by shellfire resulting in a hole on the waterline flooding the engine room. She returned to Dover with a list, and 4 casualties which later died
3/6/1940 left for Dunkirk again following repairs and arrived at Midnight with the port ablaze. She managed to get alongside and without gangways took off 1,2700 French Troops, landing them at Folkestone before going to Plymouth
12/6/1940 left Plymouth for Valery-en-Caux and while under fire off the coast took on 600 British and 400 French troops, 500 from the SS Goldfinch
17/6/1940 embarked 2,5000 troops from St Malo
18/6/1940 left Southampton for repairs on the Clyde and then ferrying troops Larne-Stranraer
13/11/1943 arrived on the Mersey for conversion to a Landing Ship Infantry, Hand-hoisting.
9/2/1944 arrived at Southampton to begin training for Operation Neptune
5/6/1940 left Weymouth with assault Convoy O1 for Omaha beachhead, She then joined the landing Ship Shuttle Service
4/1/1945 Dover-Calais Service for troops on leave
End of September 1945 she was back at Stranraer to resume commercial service. She claimed to have carried 1,360,870 troops during her war service
1946 Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire service.
1965 sold to Lefkosia Compaia Naviera SA. and renamed VENUS
1969 to Cyprus Sea Cruises (Limassol) Ltd .and renamed NYBO

Thanks, Paul - but actually that's how I found clydemaritime.co.uk. I spent a few hours scanning every google hit. I knew it was attached to Task Force 122 for Operation NEPTUNE, and that it carried some of the American combat engineers across the channel. Now I'd like to find out some more detail about her naval career.

Thought you would have googled it, there are some excellent researchers on here, they may come up with something, there is also the Mercantile Marine site and Ships Nostalgia site as you will probably know. Good luck! :)
