I haven't received anything in the post either, but I see someone has put up some details on the PSPS blog.
See here: http://pspsscotland.blogspot.co.uk/
Having not been to one for a few years, I hope to attend the October/November meetings.

Friday 19th October - Peter Reid (Branch Chairman) "Ships through the Decades"
Friday 16th November - Graham Mackenzie "S.S Shieldhall"
Friday 14th December - Iain Quinn "In the Wake of the Comet" (Joint meeting with West Highland Steamer Club)
Saturday 29th December - Branch Christmas Cruise on M.V. Cruiser to Loch Goil
Friday 18th January - Lisa Gaston and John McAndrew "Sailing Vessel Glenlee"
Friday 15th February - Members' Night
Friday 15th March - Alec Lewis "Bristol Channel Memories"
Friday 19th April - Branch AGM followed by John Whittle "40 Years of Caledonian MacBrayne"
All meetings start at 7.30pm and are held in the Renfield St Stephen's Church Centre, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow. Visitors Welcome.
Rest assured that FoW has not 'killed us off' although the Scottish Branch Committee is approx half the size it was a few years back so volunteers welcome to bring us back up to strength and performance. Issue of Paddle Wheels is done by indivindual branches when it is delivered from the printers (we aim to send them out within a week of receipt). The new edition was delivered towards the end of last week and all 650 Scottish branch envelopes were 'stuffed' on Monday evening this week and posted on Tuesday. Incidentally the 18% increase in postal charges has increased the cost of issuing PW four times per year to over £3,000 pa for Scottish Branch which also deals with all of the 'Rest of the World' membership.

That's one heck of a price to pay Royal Mail; I suppose someone has looked at it, but would TNT Mail or one of the other new commercial mail operators not maybe offer a better deal for a bulk posting? Just a thought.
Stuart. You mention the reduced size of the committee but I do have to comment that at the 2 AGM's which I've attended since I joined, I got the very distinct impression that the committee operates within a closed circle with no opportunity, or any encouragement for "outsiders" to get involved. I should add that I'm not putting myself forward as I have my hands full for the next two years with the "YES Scotland" campaign for the referendum but after that, who knows?

I believe that the postal rates have been considered - while cheaper rates may be available these do not guarantee delivery with a time frame (which can result in complaints from members due to not receiving the information sufficiently in adavance of the events) or will not deliver to all geographical locations
With regards to committee membership I cannot agree with the concept that is a closed circle. In the past, particularly during my 6 year period as Vice Chairman and Chairman I approached people to join the committee on numerous occassions, my objectives being to expand the age range, skills, etc. Unfortunately, like yourself, many approaches were rejected on the basis that the person canvassed was too busy on other commitments. The current committee has 3 members that have been involved for over 30 years, a couple (including me) for 10-15 years and a couple less than 5 years. Any full member of the Society can be elected onto the committee at the AGM. They have to be proposed and seconded by two other full members in advance of the meeting. It is then up to the members who they elect. I know that there is at least two or three members of the existing committee (including myself) who would be more than willing to step aside and make way for fresh blood and anyone that is interested in doing so should contact me (or the Branch Secy) if they wish to put themself forward for election by the members.

Don't want to bore everyone else here so we can discuss next time we meet. As you probably know, unlike other enthusiast clubs, a good few years back now, the PSPS was transformed into a company limited by guarantee in order to qualify for charitable status. his led to the formation of the Council of Management and Trustee/Directors. It is compliance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association set by the CoM that requires nominees for branch committee members to be made some time in advance of the AGM. These rules were formalised before my period on the CoM (2001-2009) but from my experience of the period that I was a Trustee, i know that there will be a good reason for the requirement being set out like that. . When there are no nominations from the membership it is necessary for the committee to find / cajole / persuade someone to fill the gap(s) in order to ensure that quorum requirements are met.

You are not alone in holding that opinion, Alasdair. While not wishing to cause upset or offence, the word 'clique' might seem apt from the point of view of an 'outsider'.alasdairmac wrote:I do have to comment that at the 2 AGM's which I've attended since I joined, I got the very distinct impression that the committee operates within a closed circle with no opportunity, or any encouragement for "outsiders" to get involved.
